How to record your screen on a Chromebook, with your voice and camera
ChromeOS has a built-in screen recorder, and it’s fine for quick clips. If you need your camera, your voice and a link to share, a browser recorder is quicker.
In short: For a silent clip, press Ctrl + Shift + Show windows and choose Screen record. To record with your camera and voice and share a link straight away, use a browser recorder like Bujua: open it in Chrome, pick screen and camera, and press Start.
Option 1: ChromeOS Screen capture
Every Chromebook has a screen recorder in the quick settings panel. Press Ctrl + Shift + Show windows, or open quick settings and choose Screen capture, then switch from the camera icon to the video icon.
- Choose full screen, a window, or a part of the screen.
- Open the settings at the bottom of the screen to choose microphone, device audio or both, turn on Front Camera, or turn on Show clicks and keys.
- Click to start. Stop with Stop recording at the bottom right, or press Search + Shift + X.
The video saves to your Downloads folder as a WebM file. For a partial screen you can record a GIF instead, which has no sound or camera. To share either one, upload it somewhere first, which is the slow part.
Option 2: record in the browser and share a link
A browser recorder runs in Chrome, so nothing needs installing, which matters on school and work Chromebooks where you can’t add apps.
- Open the free screen recorder.
- Choose Screen and camera to have your face in a bubble, or Screen only.
- Press Start recording and pick the tab, window or entire screen. Tick Share audio if you’re sharing a tab with sound.
- Press Stop and copy link. The video uploaded while you talked, so the link works immediately.
Which one should you use?
Use Screen capture for a short silent clip you’ll keep on the device. Use a browser recorder when someone else needs to watch it: you get your camera, captions, a link that plays on any device, and you can see who watched.
Troubleshooting
- No sound from the tab: Chrome only shares tab audio when you pick a tab and tick Share audio.
- Camera not available: another app may be using it. Close video calls and reload.
- Managed Chromebook blocks screen sharing: your administrator controls this policy. Camera-only recording usually still works.
Questions
Can I record my screen on a school Chromebook?
Usually yes. Browser recorders run in Chrome without installing anything. If screen sharing is blocked by your school, camera-only recording still works.
How long can a Chromebook screen recording be?
The built-in tool is limited by storage. In Bujua, up to 5 minutes free, or 60 minutes on Pro.
